LIS: 6711 Addressing Bias in Classification Systems

In Organization of Knowledge I, we learned about various cataloging methods. In this research paper, I explore biases in the Dewey Decimal and Library of Congress cataloging systems as well as critical cataloging methods.

I.b. Students demonstrate effective communication skills.

LIS: 6409 Behavioral Interview Questions

An important part of being an excellent leader is building a great team. In our Introduction to Library Administration class, we were tasked with finding a job listing and creating behavioral interview questions to foster a deeper understanding of the applicant and ensure the right fit for the position.

I.c. Students participate in professional and community engagement activities in the field.

LIS6946: Fieldwork Experience

I was offered the privilege to perform fieldwork at the Historical Society of Palm Beach County. Debi Murray, Chief Curator, a mentor for many years, served as my site supervisor. My project involved reorganizing a collection of thousands of photographs, prints and negatives. The bulk of these photographs were aerials of Palm Beach County from 1970 to 1999. Around half of the aerials had been filed in original order and I was charged with adding the other half, rearranging the order for better accessibility, choosing a sample, digitizing that sample, and adding the samples to Past Perfect.

I.d. Students demonstrate leadership skills and innovation in a diverse and global environment.

Rare Books and Special Collections centered a discussion around best practices in understanding and preparing for conservation in the face of disasters, natural or man-made. In this discussion post, I explore these topics from a global perspective. Recognizing that disasters reach every part of the world and seeking innovative solutions from multiple cultures and institutions can inform our decisions in preparation of, mitigation for, and response to disaster.
